Underrated songs of A.R Rahman

Hello everyone! So today is A.R Rahman’s birthday! He has composed so many hit songs that were brilliant! But there have been some songs that were too good, but they didn’t make it big! So here I am going to write about the list of underrated songs by A.R Rahman!

  1. Kabhi Na Kabhi

This album is a must-listen! One of the best albums I have ever come across. Each and every song is wonderful! Very brilliantly composed! Sadly this album didn’t make it big due to the movie being a flop! But I would definitely suggest you guys to listen to this album! If you don’t, then you guys are missing out on one of the best albums!

One fact about this movie is that the song ‘Mil Gayi Mil Gayi’ is the Hindi version of ‘Anjali Anjali’ from ‘Duet’ (composed by A.R Rahman). This was sung by Kumar Sanu, the first and only song he sang for A.R Rahman.

2. Doli Saja Ke Rakhna

Another wonderful yet underrated album by A.R Rahman! Each songs are wonderful and heart-touching! But this again didn’t make it big due to the movie being a flop!

 

3. Kadhalar Dhinam/Dil Hi Dil Mein

Again one of the best albums by A.R Rahman, which I thought deserved to be at the very top! Even the Hindi version of the album is as good as the original one. Especially listen to the song Ennai Villai Azhaghe/Ae Nazneen Suno Na.

 

4. Zubeidaa

Oh this album is a masterpiece! Each and every song is mesmerizing! Again, this album didn’t make it big when it deserves to be at the top! But I would suggest everyone to listen to this album! It is one of the best albums by A.R Rahman.

5. Swades

For me, this album is brilliance! Another wonderful A.R Rahman album which deserved to be at the top! The songs ‘Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera’ and ‘Yun Hi Chala’ were hits but the rest of album songs were also wonderful! Must-listen to this album!

6. The Legend of Bhagat Singh

Not only the songs are wonderful, so are the background music! Again another wonderfully composed album by A.R Rahman which is a must-listen!

7. 1947 Earth

This album was just wonderful! I felt it could’ve been a hit album! ‘Ruth Aa Gayi Re’ and ‘Dheemi Dheemi’ were just mind-blowing! Must listen to this album!

 

8. Tehzeeb

Another album which I found very unique and underrated! Each lyrics consisted of traditional poems of famous poets! Must-listen to this album!

9. Udhaya

A must-listen album by A.R Rahman! Each song is mesmerizing that it deserves to go to the top! The title song is a must listen!

10. Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities

All the songs were mesmerizing, and so were the background music! While the songs ‘Yeh Rishta’ and ‘Chinnamma’ were noticed, the rest of the songs weren’t noticed, while they were too good! Must listen album!

11. Lakeer

A.R Rahman has re-used three songs from ‘Rhythm’, which is one of my favourite albums! But still he made those three songs sound wonderful! The rest of the songs were amazing too! Definitely one of the most underrated albums by A.R Rahman!

Fact: The song ‘Rozana’ is the first film song by Viva for A.R Rahman.

12.Mangal Pandey- The Rising

This movie wasn’t a hit, hence the songs also couldn’t make it big sadly! But the songs were too good! Especially ‘Main Vari Vari’ and ‘Rasiya’! Must-listen to this album!

13. Alive- Provoked

Another beautiful yet underrated song of A.R Rahman! Karen David sung it beautifully! Have a listen!

14.Yuvvraaj

I came across this album just recently! Have to say that this is one of the most underrated albums of A.R Rahman! While the song ‘Tu Meri Dost Hai’ was a chartbuster, the rest of the songs didn’t make it that big, when they were so mesmerizing! Manmohini Morey is a must-listen!

15. Taxi Taxi – Sakkarakatti

Sakkarakatti might be my least favourite album by A.R Rahman, but this song is definitely one of my favourites! Benny Dayal sang wonderfully! Must-listen!

16. Blue

I have to admit that I actually like this soundtrack! Except for ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ which I found too mainstream, I liked all the other songs! ‘Fiqrana’, ‘Rehnuma’ and ‘Bhoola Tujhe’ are a must-listen!

17. Couples Retreat

Another wonderful album which wasn’t noticed due to the movie not becoming a hit! Especially the song ‘Sajna’ is a must listen!

18. 127 Hours

Mesmerizing album by A.R Rahman, which I felt deserved much more! ‘If I Rise’ is a beautiful song! must listen!

19. Million Dollar Arm

This album just came out last year, and this is one of the best albums that I came across! The song ‘We Could Be Kings’ sung by KT Tunstall is too mesmerizing! Must listen to the album!

20. The Hundred-Foot Journey

Another wonderful album, which I felt should have received appreciation! It definitely deserved to be nominated for the oscars, but sadly it didn’t! But must listen to the soundtrack, especially ‘Afreen’!

21. Ada.. A Way of Life

A.R Rahman had composed songs for this movie before Lagaan. This is one of the most underrated and wonderful albums of A.R Rahman! Sadly this soundtrack went unnoticed. Must listen to this album, especially ‘Ishq Ada’

22. Water

Another wonderful yet underrated album of A.R Rahman! Each song is mesmerizing! Especially listen to ‘Aayo Re Sajan Sakhi’!

 

Then there were some songs from hit soundtracks, that were underrated!

23. Dil Gira Daftan and Rehna Tu – Delhi 6

While this movie had a lot of hit songs like ‘Masakalli’, ‘Genda Phool’, ‘Arziyan’, ‘Delhi-6’, these two songs according to me are the most underrated in this album! These 2 songs are very heart-touching! Must-listen!

24. Manmohana – Jodha Akbar

While this movie had a lot of hit songs like ‘Jashn-E-Bahaara’ and ‘Khwaja Mera Khwaja’, this song according to me is so beautiful and heart-touching! Wonderful composition and singing! Must-listen to this song!

 

25. Naina Milaike and Mere Yaar Mila De – Saathiya

These were the only 2 songs that wasn’t reused from Alaipayuthey! While Saathiya was a hit album, these 2 songs were underrated! These were 2 beautiful songs that are a must listen!

 

26. Kismat Se Tum and Ek Tu Hi Bharosa – Pukar

While the songs ‘Key Sera Sera’ and ‘Sunta Hai Mera Khuda’ were huge hits, these two songs I felt, were underrated! these 2 songs really captured my heart! must listen!

27. Liquid Dance, Gangsta Blues and Mausam and Escape – Slumdog Millionaire

While ‘Jai Ho,’ O Saya’ and ‘Dreams on Fire’ were huge hits, these songs didn’t become huge hits, when they deserved! These songs were breathtaking! Must listen!

28. Tango for Taj and the Dichotomy of Fame – Rockstar

While songs like ‘Sadda Haq’, ‘Tum Ho’ and ‘Kun Faya Kun’ were huge hits, these songs were underrated! These 2 are beautiful instrumental music, that would just capture your heart!

29. Anbendra/ Roshan Huyi Raat – Minsara Kanavu/ Sapnay

Minsara Kanavu/Sapnay was a hit soundtrack! But I felt this song wasn’t noticed enough when it is one of the best songs composed by A.R Rahman! Must listen!

30. Nagamani Nagamani/ Rukumani Rukumani- Roja

Roja again was a hit album of A.R Rahman! However, I felt that this song was slightly underrated when it could have been at the top as well! Wonderful composition!

Then there are albums which were too good, but have sadly been forgotten.

31. Taj Mahal

This is one of my favourite albums by A.R Rahman! But since the movie didn’t become a hit, the songs became forgotten! Anyways this is a must-listen album! All the songs are mesmerizing!

32.  Sangamam

There was a time when these songs were a hit, but since the movie flopped, the songs have been forgotten! this is one of the best albums by A.R Rahman! each song is so mesmerizing, that it touches your heart! Have a listen!

Tabu in Main Hoon Na

So I was watching Main Hoon Na on TV after a long time. I’ve seen the film so many times but for the first time I noticed something which me or I don’t think anyone else would’ve noticed! So here goes.. Tabu was in Main Hoon Na! Yes.. She made a small appearance at the part where Shahrukh Khan was dancing in front of the college kids.. Actors who were the original choice for these popular films – Part 3 – Kollywood

Like Bollywood and Hollywood, even in Kollywood there were films in which these actors weren’t the original choice. Lets check out the list of actors who were the original choice for these popular Kollywood films.

1) Indian

Aishwarya Rai was initially offered to play female lead, but she turned it down and hence the role went to Manisha Koirala. Raadhika was offered to play the other lead opposite the older Kamal Hassan, but she turned it down and the role went to Sukanya.

2) Meaghamann

Shruti Hassan was offered to play the female lead, but she reportedly turned it down. Taapsee Pannu was also offered, but the role went to Hansika.

3) Aranmanai

Apparently Arya was offered the male lead, but the role went to Vinay Rai. Lakshmi Rai’s role was initially offered to Ragini Dwivedi, but she turned it down.

4) Kochadaiyaan

Anushka Shetty was initially offered to play the female lead, but she turned it down. Several actresses such as Asin, Vidya Balan and even Katrina Kaif were approached, but the role finally went to Deepika Padukone.

5) Thuppakki

Deepika Padukone was initially offered the female lead, but she refused. Several actresses such as Sonam Kapoor, Priya Anand, Pranitha, Angela Jonsson were also offered, but the role finally went to Kajal Aggarwal.

6) Oru Kal Oru Kannadi

Asin and Nayanthara were initially offered to play the female lead, but the role went to Hansika Motwani.

7) Enthiran

Several actresses such as Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Asin, Trisha, Priyamani, Nayanthara, Shriya Saran etc, were also considered to play the female lead, but the role went to Aishwarya Rai. Amitabh Bachchan, J.D Chakravarthy, Narain and Arjun were originally considered for the antagonist role, but the role went to Danny Denzongpa.

8) Arrambam

Anushka Shetty, Amala Paul and Kajal Aggarwal were all considered for the lead female role, but the role went to Nayanthara. Arya’s role was initially offered to Vishnuvardhan’s brother Kreshna, but he refused and thus Arya got the role. Richa Gangopadhyay was offered to play the female role opposite Arya, but the role went to Taapsee Pannu.

9) Raja Rani

The role of Surya was initially offered to Sivakarthikeyan, but the role went to Jai, which made him popular. The role of Keerthana was originally offered to Priya Anand, but the role went to Nazriya Nazim.

10) Billa (2007)

Isha Sharwani was also considered for the female role, but she lost out to Nayanthara. The other female role was initially offered to Shriya Saran, but she refused. Other actresses such as Trisha, Reemma Sen, Asin and Bhanu were also considered, then the role went to Pooja Umashankar. But Pooja refused the role as she didn’t want to wear a bikini and hence the role went to Namitha. Prakash Raj was offered the role of an inspector, but the role went to Prabhu, Vadivelu was originally offered to play the comedian, but the role went to Santhanam. The dance number was originally offered to Mumaith Khan, but later Rose Dawn (now known as Hazel Keech) got it.

11) Raavanan

Abhishek Bachchan was initially offered to play Aishwarya Rai’s husband, the cop while Vikram played Veera. But Abhishek Bachchan refused as he was unfamiliar with the language. Hence the role went to Prithviraj.

12) Goa

Genelia D’souza was offered to play the female role opposite Jai, but she refused. Amrita Rao’s sister Preetika Rao (who was last seen in the TV serial Beintehaa) was also approached, but she backed out at the last minute. The role went to Pooja, and later she was replaced by Piaa Bajpai.

13) Vaanam

Jiiva was originally offered to play the male lead, but the role went to Simbu. Nayanthara was offered to play the female lead, but she refused. Anushka Shetty was then offered, but after she refused, Taapsee Pannu was offered, but she rejected as well and then Anushka agreed to play the role.

14) Thillalangadi

Madhavan was initially offered to play the male lead, but the role went to Jayam Ravi. Ileana D’Cruz who did the role in the Telugu version, was offered to play the female lead, but she refused. Bhanu was also offered, but the role finally went to Tamannah.

15) Aadukalam

Shriya Saran was offered the female lead, but she turned it down due to scheduling conflicts. Trisha was offered next, but she refused too due to scheduling conflicts. Then the role went to newcomer Taapsee Pannu.

16) Siruthai

Anushka Shetty who played the female lead in the original Telugu version, was initially offered to play the same role but she refused and the role went to Tamannah.

17) Mankatha

The role of one of Ajith’s sidekick was offered to Manoj Manchu, but he refused and the role went to Vaibhav Reddy. Ganesh Venkataraman was offered the 4th sidekick role but he refused. Nandha was also offered but he turned it down as well, and the role went to newcomer Ashwin Kakumanu. Prasanna was offered to play the role of the police officer, but he rejected due to busy schedules, and the role went to Arjun. Samantha was originally offered to play the female lead, but she refused. Actresses such as Anushka Shetty, Neetu Chandra and Lakshmi Rai were also offered, but the role finally went to Trisha. Sneha was approached to play the role opposite Arjun, but the role went to Andrea.

18) Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai

Bipasha Basu, Reemma Sen, Shriya Saran, Priyamani and Tamannah were considered for the roles of the three female roles, but the roles went to Neetu Chandra, Tanushree Dutta and newcomer Sarah Jane Dias.

Shruti Hassan was the first choice, but she initially refused due to date clashes. The role was then offered to Amala Paul and she confirmed. But Amala Paul later backed off and Shruti Hassan agreed to play the role as her Telugu film was delayed.

Prabhu Deva was initially offered to play the role of Srikanth, but he refused. Prasanth was then offered, but the role went to Abbas. Soundarya was the first option to play the role of Meenakshi, but she refused due to scheduling conflicts and the role went to Aishwarya Rai.

21) Kannathil Muthamittal

Rani Mukerji, Soundarya and Bhoomika Chawla were initially considered for the role of Indira, but the role finally went to Simran. Vikram was offered to play Dileepan, but he refused and the role went to J.D Chakravarthy.

22) Alaipayuthey

Vasundhara Das was initially offered to play the female lead, but the role went to Shalini. Vikram was offered to play Swarnamalya’s fiancee, but he refused. Shahrukh Khan, Mammooty and Mohanlal were considered for the role of Khushboo’s husband, but the role went to Arvind Swamy.

23) Kakka Kaaka

The role of the male lead first wasn’t offered to Surya. It was Ajith. But he refused. Vikram was then offered but he refused too. Jyothika suggested Surya to Gautham Menon, and hence he got the role.

24) Bharathi

The female role was first offered to Suvvalakshmi, but she refused and the role went to Devayani.

25) Sillinu Oru Kaadhal

Asin was offered to play Bhoomika Chawla’s role, but she refused and thus Bhoomika played the role.

26) Anniyan

The role of the female lead was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai, but she refused due to scheduling conflicts. Hence the role went to Sadha.

27) Vaaranam Aayiram

Deepika Padukone was first offered to play the role of Priya, was supposed to make her debut with this film, but she backed off and signed Om Shanti Om. Andrea was confirmed but was later dropped off. Asin was interested to play the role, but Surya refused since she also rejected Sillinu Oru Kadhal. Thus, the role went to Divya Spandana. Genelia D’souza was initially offered to play Sameera Reddy’s role, but she later backed off as Gautham Menon refused to play her hefty salary which she demanded. Hence the role went to Sameera Reddy, who made her debut in Tamil films.

28) Vasool Raja MBBS

Sonali Bendre, who played the female lead in the Telugu version was offered to play the role in the Tamil version, but she refused and the role went to Sneha. K.Balachandar was initially offered to play Kamal’s father, but he refused to act and Girish Karnad was finalized, but the role finally went to Nagesh.

29) Thenali

Mohanlal was offered to play Dr.Kailash and Simran was offered to play Janaki but the roles went to Jayaram and Jyothika.

30) Rhythm

Arvind Swamy was offered to play the lead role, but he backed off and the role went to Arjun.

31) Dasaavatharam

Vidya Balan was originally offered to play the female lead, and was going to make her Tamil debut with this film, but she backed off due to date clashes. Several other actresses such as Mumtaj, Kiran Rathod, Meena, Kamalinee Mukherkee, Trisha, Nayanthara, Meera Jasmine, Vasundhara Das etc. were also offered, but they all refused. Shriya Saran was forced to opt out by the producers of her film ‘Sivaji’, a film built as a rival. Then finally the role went to Asin.

32) Vishwaroopam

Initially Sonakshi Sinha was offered to play the role of Kamal’s wife, and was going to make her Tamil debut with this film. She backed off and the role went to Pooja Kumar.

33) Roja

Aishwarya, daughter of Lakshmi was offered to play the female lead, but the role went to Madhoo.

34) Anjali

Mohan was offered the male lead, but he had to opt out due to personal reasons and the role went to Raghuvaran.

35) Bombay

Vikram was offered the male lead, but he backed off as he was willing to grow a beard. Thus, the role went to Arvind Swamy.

36) Avvai Shanmughi

The role of Meena’s father was initially offered to Sivaji Ganesan, but he was ill and hence he couldn’t commit. The role went to Gemini Ganesan. Sri Durga and Sanghavi were considered for the other female role, but the role went to Heera Rajagopal.

37) Thevar Magan

Meena was initially offered to play the role of Panchavarnam, but she refused due to date problems and the role went to Revathi.

38) Iruvar

The role of Tamizhselvan was initially offered to Nana Patekar, but he refused. Actors Mammooty, Kamal Hassan, Sathyaraj and Mithun Chakraborty were also offered but they refused too. Madhavan was asked to come for a screen test but Mani Ratnam left him out as he felt that Madhavan was too young. Thus the role went to Prakash Raj.

39) Thiruda Thiruda

The role of Kadhir was first offered to J.D Chakaravarthy, but he refused and the role went to Anand.

40) Nerukku Ner

Ajith was offered to play the lead role with Vijay, but he refused due to date problems. Prabhu Deva was offered next but he refused too. Director Vasanth decided to play the role, but finally the role went to Surya, who made his debut with this film.

41) Arunachalam

Manisha Koirala and Meena were considered for the role of the female lead, but the role went to Soundarya.

42) Jodi

Aishwarya Rai was offered the female role, but she refused due to busy schedule and the role went to Simran. Aishwarya then agreed to do a guest appearance, but the role went to Isha Koppikkar.

43) Mudhalvan

The role was initially written for Rajnikanth, but he couldn’t commit. Vijay was considered, but he turned it down. Kamal Hassan was also approached but he couldn’t do it as he was doing Hey Ram that time. Thus the role went to Arjun. Meena was offered to play the female role, but she refused as she was doing another film with Arjun that period called ‘Rhythm’. Thus the role went to Manisha Koirala.

44) Gentleman

Sarathkumar was initially offered to play the lead role, but he refused and thus he was replaced by Arjun.

45) Padayappa

Simran and Meena were considered for the role of Neelambari, but the role went to Ramya Krishnan, who won the Best Actress that year. Simran was also offered to play the role of Vasundhara but the role went to Soundarya. Shalini was offered to play Padayappa’s sister, but the role went to Sithara.

46) Kaathala Kaathala

Meena and Simran were offered to play the female role opposite Prabhu Deva, but they both turned it down and the role went to Rambha. Nagma was offered to play the female role opposite Kamal Hassan but she refused as she and Rambha didn’t get along on the sets of Janakiraman. Soundarya volunteered to do the role.

47) Mouna Ragam

The role of Divya was initially offered to Nadhiya, but she couldn’t commit and hence Revathi got the role.

48) Muthal Muriyathai

The female lead was initially offered to Radhika, but she chose to do the film ‘Swati Mutyam’ and the role went to Radha.

49) Moondrum Pirai

The role of Bhagyalakshmi was first offered to Sripriya, but she couldn’t commit, hence the role went to Sridevi.

50) Rajadhi Raja

Revathi and Rubini were supposed to play the female roles, but the roles went to Radha and Nadhiya.

51) Apoorva Sagodharargal

Gandhimathi was supposed to play Manorama’s role, but due to changes in the script she was replaced.

52) Meendum Kokila

Rekha was offered the other lead, and was supposed to make her Tamil debut with this film, but she was pulled ou and the role went to Deepa.

53) Sigappu Rojakal

Sivakumar was offered to play the male lead, but he rejected as he felt the role didn’t suit him. Hence the role went to Kamal Hassan.

My last post was about Bollywood, now continuing with Hollywood. You would be surprised to know that these were the first choices for these roles.

1) Star Wars

The role of Han Solo was originally offered to Al Pacino, but he refused. Christopher Walken was also considered but the role went to Harrison Ford.

2) Pretty Woman

The role of Edward Lewis was originally offered to Christopher Reeve, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington and Al Pacino, but they all turned it down. Finally the role went to Richard Gere. The role of the female lead was offered to Molly Ringwald,Daryl Hannah and Michelle Pfeiffer, but they refused and Julia Roberts then agreed to play.

3) Forrest Gump

The role of Forrest Gump was offered to none other than John Travolta! But he refused and the role went to Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks won his second oscar for this film.

4) Twilight

The original choice for the role of Bella was Emily Browing, but she declined. Jennifer Lawrence was also considered but the role went to Kristen Stewert. Even the role of Edward was offered to Henry Cavill, his loss was Robert Pattinson’s gain.

5) Casino Royale

The original choice for James Bond were Hugh Jackman, Sam Worthington, Henry Cavill etc. but the role ultimately went to Daniel Craig.

6) Matrix

The role of Neo was originally offered to Will Smith, but he declined. Tom Cruise was also offered but the role went to Keanu Reeves.

7) Indiana Jones

Did you know that Harrison Ford wasn’t the first choice for Indiana Jones? it was actor Tom Selleck! He was forced to choose between the two roles and decided to honour his original commitment to the TV show. Hence the role went Harrison Ford which made him popular.

8) Toy Story

The original choice for the voice of Woody was Paul Newman. But his loss was Tom Hanks’ gain.

9) Alien

The role of Ripley was originally offered to Meryl Streep, her loss was Sigourney Weaver’s gain and she was norminated for BAFTA award for the most promising newcomer.

10) Harry Potter

You would be surprised to know that the role of Hagrid was originally offered to none other than Robin Williams! His loss was Robbie Coltrane’s gain, which made him popular. Tim Roth was originally offered to play Professor Snape, but he refused and Alan Rickman played the role. After the death of Richard Harris who played the role of Dumbledore in the first two films, Ian Mckellen a.k.a Gandalf was offered the role of Dumbledore, but he couldn’t commit as he was doing ‘Lord of the Rings’, hence the role went to Michael Gambon.

11) The Notebook

The role of Allie was originally offered to Britney Spears. Several actresses such as Ashley Judd, Reese Witherspoon, Jesiccal Biel were also in the line, but the role went to Rachel McAdams.

12) Batman Returns

The role of Catwoman was originally offered to Annette Benning, but the role went to Michelle Pfeiffer.

13) Hook

The role of Captain Hook was offered to David Bowie, but his loss was Dustin Hoffman’s gain.

14) Bad Boys

Actors Dana Carvey and John Lovitz were the original choices were the leads but the roles went to Martin Lawrence and Will Smith.

15) The Breakfast Club

Nicolas Cage was first considered for the role of John Bender but they couldn’t afford his salary requirements. John Cusack was considered next but the role went to John Hughes.

16) Django Unchained

The role of Django was written for Will Smith, but he refused and the role went to Jamie Foxx.

17) Iron Man

The role of Tony Stark/Iron Man was originally offered to Tom Cruise, but he refused as he didn’t find the script strong enough. Then the role went to Robert Downey Jr.

18) 10 Things I Hate About You

Ashton Kutcher was considered for the male lead, but he lost out to Heath Ledger.

19) Titanic

Did you know that the role of Rose was offered to none other than Gwenyth Paltrow? But she lost out to Kate Winslet.

20) Hocus Pocus

The role of Max was offered to none other than Leonardo Dicaprio, but he turned down the role to star in ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’. The role went to Omri Katz.

21) Batman Begins

The original choice for Bruce Wayne/Batman was David Boreanaz (Booth from Bones) but the role ultimately went to Christian Bale.

22) Pirates of the Carribean

Did you know that the role of Jack Sparrow was offered to none other than Jim Carrey? but ultimately the role went to Johnny Depp.

23) Mean Girls

Did you know that Lindsay Lohan was actually offered to play Regina George? but she turned as she she didn’t want people to base her personality off the character. Hence Rachel McAdams played the role and Lindsay Lohan played the role of Cady.

24) Spider-Man

Did you know that Katrina Kaif was the original choice to play the role of Meenamma? But she rejected. So many other actors such as Kareena Kapoor and Asin were also in the line, but the role finally went to Deepika Padukone, and now this movie is one of the highest grossing films of Bollywood.

Dharmendra was also interested in playing the role of Thakur, but director Ramesh Sippy told him that if he had played Thakur, Sanjeev Kumar would play Veeru which would be opposite Hema Malini and which Dharmendra didn’t want that, as he was trying to woo Hema Malini. Hence he did the role of Veeru.

Did you know that Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan weren’t the first choices? It was Kishore Kumar and Mehmood. Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee was asked to meet Kishore Kumar to discuss the project. However, when he went to Kishore Kumar’s residence, he was driven away by the gatekeeper due to a misunderstanding. Kishore Kumar who himself was a Bengali had done a stage show organized by another Bengali man, and was involved in a dispute with this man over financial matters. He had instructed his gatekeeper to drive away this “Bengali”, if he ever visited the house. The gatekeeper misunderstood Hrishikesh Mukherjee to be this “Bengali”, and refused him entry. The incident hurt him and he decided not to work with Kishore Kumar. Even Mehmood had to leave the film as well and thus Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan got the roles.

42) Pakeezah

Ashok Kumar who played the role of Shahbuddin was originally offered to play to role of Salim, but the role went to Raaj Kumar.

43) Amar Prem

Original choice for Anand’s role was Raaj Kumar as the director Shakti Samanta felt that Rajesh Khanna who had become a super star after the hit Aradhana, wouldn’t be interested in doing a film around the female lead. However, Rajesh Khanna convinced Shakti Samanta that he would do justice to the role.

44) Aandhi

The role of Aarti Devi was originally offered to Vyjanthimala, but she turned it down. Suchitra Sen was then offered the role.

Dilip Kumar was then offered, he agreed to play both Birju and Shamu. However, Nargis objected that the public would not accept their casting as mother and son because she had done several romantic films alongside him. Then Sunil Dutt got the role. Mother India is one of the most popular films.

55) Naya Daur

Initially Madhubala was offered the lead role. An advance payment was given to her and shooting began and continued smoothly for 15 days. B.R. Chopra, the director, wanted the unit to travel to Bhopal for an extended outdoor shooting. Ataullah Khan, the father of Madhubala, objected to this and claimed that the entire Bhopal schedule was a ruse to give Dilip Kumar the opportunity to romance his daughter (Dilip Kumar and Madhubala were in a relationship at the time). Finally, B.R. Chopra sued Madhubala for the cash advance she received from him for a film she now had no intention of completing. She was replaced by Vyjanthimala.

56) Devdas (1955)

The roles of Paro and Chandramukhi were originally offered to Meena Kumari and Nargis. But Meena Kumari couldn’t do the role as her husband had some conditions which was not ok with director Bimal Roy. Bina Rai was next offered, but she refused. Suraiya also wanted the role, but the role finally went to Suchitra Sen. Nargis refused to do Chandramukhi as she wanted to play Paro. No one was willing to play Chandramukhi. Since there was no other choice, Vyjanthimala got the role.

57) Mr. & Mrs. 55

Vyjanthimala was offered the lead role, but she refused and the role went to Madhubala. In a recent interview, Vyjanthimala stated that she regretted not doing the film.

Facts about A.R Rahman

Hey all, so today is maestro A.R Rahman’s birthday. So i’ll be sharing some facts about A.R Rahman, some known some unknown.

1) At the age of 15, he was thrown out of school because of short attendance.

2) He was originally a Hindu by the name of A.S Dileep Kumar. He converted to Islam with the name of Allah Raka Rahman when a Pir called Sheikh Abdul Quadir cured her sister from a fatal illness.

3) Along with making music, he also has a passion for gaming. He spends his free time with his kids, Khatija, Rahima and son Ameen by playing.

4) His birthday falls on the same day as his son’s. He doesn’t believe in lavish celebrations. He visits an orphanage on his birthday and celebrates the day in peace.

5) Penguin Publishers came up with A.R Rahman’s first biography but he refused to accept it. According to him, it was considerably removed from reality.

6) In 1987, Rahman composed a music album by the name of ‘Disco Disco’ in collaboration with Tamil singer and actor Malayasia Vasudevan and another Sufi album. He also did an English album called ‘Set Me Free’ with Malgudi Shubha that was released in the beginning of 1990s.

7) His early influences were Vangelis and John Williams. Some years later, he discovered a new-found interest in jazz with Chick Corea, Dave Grusin and Herbie Hancock

8) He featured in a TV programme for kids called ‘Wonder Balloon’ on Doordarshan in 1980. Playing four keyboards on TV was an exhilarating experience for Rahman and people began to recognise him.

9) He wanted to become a computer engineer. “I wanted to be a computer engineer when I was a kid. Electronic gadgets and technology fascinated me.”

10) The world knows that his first film is “Roja”. But this is not true. His first film was “Yodha”. This film starred Mohanlal in Malayalam.

11) He has lot of interests towards Social service. He loves doing that without any kind of fame.

12) During important film festivals Rahman is very conscious about his wardrobe. His wife Saira and a Mumbai based designer Deepak decides about his dresses.

13) The old keyboard that he used to play as a teenager is still displayed in his studio.

14) During the composition of a film Rahman sings “Pudhiya vaanam Pudhiya bhoomi engum pani mazhai pozhigiradhu” loudly which indicates that all the works related to him is done.

20) His album “Couples Retreat” bagged more than 100 million dollars. This Hollywood movie has a tamil song as well.

21) A.R Rahman is the only Indian to be featured in ‘List of best-selling music artists of the world’

22) He does not let his wife or children inside the studio when he’s working.

23) He usually sees his children off to school before he sleeps after working nights!

32) Actress Freida Pinto and Sonam Kapoor helped AR Rahman land some prized international projects. “It was sweet of Freida Pinto to recommend me to Julian Schnabel for Miral. I was keen to write new music for him but he insisted on using ‘The Bombay Theme’ and a track from He Ping’s Warriors of Heaven and Earth.” Rahman later says: “Danny (Boyle) told me later that it was Anil Kapoor and his kids who had recommended me to him. They would play him my songs and then the sound recordist Resul Pukkutty, also played my music to him.”

33) He might have a lot of fans but Rahman’s daughter Khatija doesn’t like her dad signing autographs in school and has even asked him not to come there.

Today I’m gonna post about all the amazing movies that we saw this year. List includes Hollywood, Bollywood and Kollywood. Again, I’ve created polls so I expect everyone to answer.

This year, so many amazing movies came out. Here are the list:-

1) Interstellar

Christopher Nolan, who has made amazing films such as ‘Memento’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘Inception’ etc. came up with this new sci-fi film Interstellar, starring Matthew McCoughney and Anne Hathaway. The film features a crew of astronauts who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity.

2) Boyhood

Richard Linklater’s ‘Boyhood’ starring Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater and Ethan Hawke, was declared a landmark film by the critics.  The film showed the growth of a young boy and his older sister to adulthood. This film was praised for the amazing story, direction and acting.

3) Dawn of The Planet of the Apes

The sequel of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ was critically acclaimed, being praised for the story, visual effects, directing, acting etc. The film is directed by Mark Reeves starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman.

4) The Grand Budapest Hotel

It’s a comedy film directed by Wes Anderson, starring Ralph Fiennes. This film was about a conceirge who teams up with one of his employees to prove his innocence after he is framed for murder. The film got four Golden Globe Award nominations, including for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Director.

5) How to Train Your Dragon 2

This is the sequel to ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. The film takes place five years after the first film, featuring Hiccup and his friends as young adults as they meet Valka, Hiccup’s long-lost mother, and Drago Bludvist, a madman who wants to conquer the world. This film was critically acclaimed, praised for acting, action scenes, emotional depth and much darker compared to its prequel.

6) The Fault In Our Stars

It is based on the book ‘The Fault In Our Stars’. It was directed by Josh Boone, starring Shailene Woody and Ansel Elgort. It’s about a girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she subsequently meets and falls in love with a guy named Augustus Waters. This movie was a huge hit, with Shailene Woody being praised for her performance. It was also no.1 at the box during its opening weekend.

7) The Hundred-Foot Journey

Another wonderful film based on the book, ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’. The film was directed by Lass Hallstrom, starring Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon. It is about a feud between two adjacent restaurants: one operated by a recently relocated Indian family and the other managed by a Michelin-starred French chef.  The movie got positive reviews with Helen Mirren being nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

8) Fury

It’s a war drama film around the World War II times starring Brad Pitt and Logan Lerman. The director David Ayer was influenced by the service of veterans in his family and by reading books such as Belton Y. Cooper’s Death Traps about American armored warfare in World War II.  The film was critically acclaimed, being praised for it’s visual style, the direction and the performances of Brad Pitt and Logan Lerman.

9) Birdman

It’s a black-comedy film. It is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, starring Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts. It tells the story of an actor famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.  The reviews have been positive being praised for the film’s concept and execution, story, screenplay, direction and the performances of Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton. It is also considered as one of the best films of the year.

10) Whiplash

It is a drama film. It’s directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Miles Teller and J.K Simmons. It’s about a young jazz drummer, who attends one of the best music schools in the country under the tutelage of the school’s fearsome maestro of jazz. The film received universal acclaim.

Same with Bollywood, a lot of wonderful movies came out this year.

1) Highway

Highway is a drama film directed by Imitiaz Ali, starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt. The film is about a young girl who is kidnapped before her wedding and held for ransom wherein she develops Stockholm Syndrome towards her kidnapper. Though the film underperformed at the box office, the movie was critically acclaimed, praising the direction and the performances of Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt.

2) Queen

Queen is a comedy-drama film directed by Vikas Bahl and starring Kangana Ranaut. It is about a girl named Rani, an under-confident girl from New Delhi who embarks alone on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam after her fiancé calls off their wedding. The film was a huge hit with Kangana Ranaut being critically acclaimed for her performance in the movie.

3) Mardaani

It’s a crime drama directed by Pradeep Sarkar, produced by Aditya Chopra and starring Rani Mukerji. The film tells the story of a female cop whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girl leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking by the Indian mafia. The film recieved rave reviews.

4) Finding Fanny

It’s a comedy film directed by Homi Adjania and starring Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Kapur, Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor.The film is based on a road trip set in Goa and follows the journey of five dysfunctional friends who set out on a road trip in search of Fanny, the love-interest of Naseeruddin Shah. The film recieved critical acclaim.

5) Haider

It’s a crime drama film directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor. The film is also based on Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. It’s set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Haider, a poet, returns to Kashmir at the peak of the conflict to seek answers about his disappeared father and ends up tugged into the politics of the state. The film was a huge hit, considered Vishal Bharadwaj and Shahid Kapoor’s best.

6) PK

Rajkumar Hirani’s new film ‘PK’ starring Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma is a huge hit worldwide. It is a satire on god and godmen. Within two weeks of it’s release date this film has made it into it the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in international markets.

7) Ugly

Anurag Kashyap’s new film ‘Ugly’ starring Rahul Bhat and Ronit Roy received positive reviews and was screened on 2013 Cannes Festival. The film is A terrible tale of corruption, indifference, and systemic violence starts when 10 year old daughter of an aspiring actor disappears. Considered one of the best.

8) Hasee Toh Phasee

It is a romantic-comedy drama starring Siddharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra and Adah Sharma. It’s about two misfits who struggle to fit in with their families and later discover that they have a closer bond than they realised. The film was a huge success and recieved positive reviews.

9) Citylights

It is a drama film directed by Hansal Mehta, starring Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha. The story of the film is about a poor farmer from Rajasthan coming to Mumbai in search of livelihood. The film won rave reviews from most critics and also became a success.

10) Dedh Ishqiya

It’s a sequel to the film ‘Ishqiya’, it stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi. Despite being underperformed at the box office, the story got good reviews and Madhuri and Huma were praised for their roles

Kollywood

Same with Kollywood, a lot of movies came this year, some were critically acclaimed, some were commerically successful.

1) Jigarthanda

It’s a musical gangster film directed by Karthik Subbaraj, starring Siddharth, Lakshmi Menon and Bobby Simha. It’s about an aspiring director tries his best to make a violent gangster film. His discreet attempts to research a gangster fail miserably. He discovers a mole in the gang and things go out of control for him. The movie received rave reviews by the critics and film directors.

2) Kaththi

It is an action thriller film directed by AR Murugadoss, starring Vijay in dual role and Samantha. The film recieved positive reviews and became one of the highest grossing films of the year.

3) Vellai Illa Pattathari (VIP)

It is a masala film directed by Velraj, starring Dhanush and Amala Paul. The film is about a longtime unemployed youth, who gets his dream job after a series of lashes from life and his competitor hinders his growth. Will he be able to stand out against all odds is what the movie is all about.  The film received positive reviews.

4) Kaaviyathalaivan

It is a historic film directed by Vasanthabalan, starring Siddharth and Prithviraj. the film is about the lives of two theatre artistes and the competition that exists between them in a small drama troupe. The film was critically acclaimed, considered one of the best this year.

5) Sathuranga Vettai

It is a black comedy-heist film directed by debutant H.Vinodh, starring Natarajan Subramaniam and Ishara Nair. The film is about the practical venture that portrays the life of a common man and his flawless cons in act. His ideologies seem to work and he makes money over a short period until his fates turn his own ideologies against him by his followers. In the recovery process he’s born as a new man, falls in love and is about to start over, but he was destined for even bigger scams and con acts. The film was critically acclaimed and was declared a hit.

6) Thegidi

It is a murder mystery film directed by P.Ramesh, starring Ashok Selvan and Janani Iyer. The film is about a young man with finely honed observational skills takes a job as a private detective, only to find that he’s gotten in over his head. The film recieved positive reviews from the critics.

7) Cuckoo

It is a romantic film directed by Raju Murugan, produced by Fox Star Studios, starring Dinesh and Malavika Nair playing a visually challenged pair. It is about a visually impaired man who works as a singer for an entertainment troupe and then falls in love with a blind woman. It recieved positive reviews.

8) Jeeva

It is a sports drama film directed by Suseenthiran starring Vishnu and Sri Divya. It is about an ambitious young cricketer who dreams of playing for the Indian national team encounters multiple obstacles to realizing his dream. The film received positive reviews.

9) Mundasupatti

It is an adventure comedy film directed by Ram, starring Vishnu and Nandita. It is about a photographer who works in a village where people don’t like to have their pictures taken. The film was critically acclaimed.

10) Goli Soda

It is directed by Vijay Milton, starring Kishore, Sree Raam, Pandi and Murugesh.  The story is about four boys who work and live together in a market. The film was critically acclaimed and was declared a hit.
