Top Movies 2014

Today I’m gonna post about all the amazing movies that we saw this year. List includes Hollywood, Bollywood and Kollywood. Again, I’ve created polls so I expect everyone to answer.


This year, so many amazing movies came out. Here are the list:-

1) Interstellar

Christopher Nolan, who has made amazing films such as ‘Memento’, ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘Inception’ etc. came up with this new sci-fi film Interstellar, starring Matthew McCoughney and Anne Hathaway. The film features a crew of astronauts who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity.

2) Boyhood

Richard Linklater’s ‘Boyhood’ starring Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, Lorelei Linklater and Ethan Hawke, was declared a landmark film by the critics.  The film showed the growth of a young boy and his older sister to adulthood. This film was praised for the amazing story, direction and acting.

3) Dawn of The Planet of the Apes

The sequel of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ was critically acclaimed, being praised for the story, visual effects, directing, acting etc. The film is directed by Mark Reeves starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman.

4) The Grand Budapest Hotel

It’s a comedy film directed by Wes Anderson, starring Ralph Fiennes. This film was about a conceirge who teams up with one of his employees to prove his innocence after he is framed for murder. The film got four Golden Globe Award nominations, including for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Director.

5) How to Train Your Dragon 2

This is the sequel to ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. The film takes place five years after the first film, featuring Hiccup and his friends as young adults as they meet Valka, Hiccup’s long-lost mother, and Drago Bludvist, a madman who wants to conquer the world. This film was critically acclaimed, praised for acting, action scenes, emotional depth and much darker compared to its prequel.

6) The Fault In Our Stars

It is based on the book ‘The Fault In Our Stars’. It was directed by Josh Boone, starring Shailene Woody and Ansel Elgort. It’s about a girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she subsequently meets and falls in love with a guy named Augustus Waters. This movie was a huge hit, with Shailene Woody being praised for her performance. It was also no.1 at the box during its opening weekend.

7) The Hundred-Foot Journey

Another wonderful film based on the book, ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’. The film was directed by Lass Hallstrom, starring Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon. It is about a feud between two adjacent restaurants: one operated by a recently relocated Indian family and the other managed by a Michelin-starred French chef.  The movie got positive reviews with Helen Mirren being nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

8) Fury

It’s a war drama film around the World War II times starring Brad Pitt and Logan Lerman. The director David Ayer was influenced by the service of veterans in his family and by reading books such as Belton Y. Cooper’s Death Traps about American armored warfare in World War II.  The film was critically acclaimed, being praised for it’s visual style, the direction and the performances of Brad Pitt and Logan Lerman.

9) Birdman

It’s a black-comedy film. It is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, starring Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts. It tells the story of an actor famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.  The reviews have been positive being praised for the film’s concept and execution, story, screenplay, direction and the performances of Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton. It is also considered as one of the best films of the year.

10) Whiplash

It is a drama film. It’s directed by Damien Chazelle, starring Miles Teller and J.K Simmons. It’s about a young jazz drummer, who attends one of the best music schools in the country under the tutelage of the school’s fearsome maestro of jazz. The film received universal acclaim.

So which one of these movies are your favourites?



Same with Bollywood, a lot of wonderful movies came out this year.

1) Highway

Highway is a drama film directed by Imitiaz Ali, starring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt. The film is about a young girl who is kidnapped before her wedding and held for ransom wherein she develops Stockholm Syndrome towards her kidnapper. Though the film underperformed at the box office, the movie was critically acclaimed, praising the direction and the performances of Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt.

2) Queen

Queen is a comedy-drama film directed by Vikas Bahl and starring Kangana Ranaut. It is about a girl named Rani, an under-confident girl from New Delhi who embarks alone on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam after her fiancé calls off their wedding. The film was a huge hit with Kangana Ranaut being critically acclaimed for her performance in the movie.

3) Mardaani

It’s a crime drama directed by Pradeep Sarkar, produced by Aditya Chopra and starring Rani Mukerji. The film tells the story of a female cop whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girl leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking by the Indian mafia. The film recieved rave reviews.

4) Finding Fanny

It’s a comedy film directed by Homi Adjania and starring Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Kapur, Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor.The film is based on a road trip set in Goa and follows the journey of five dysfunctional friends who set out on a road trip in search of Fanny, the love-interest of Naseeruddin Shah. The film recieved critical acclaim.

5) Haider

It’s a crime drama film directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and starring Shahid Kapoor, Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor. The film is also based on Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. It’s set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Haider, a poet, returns to Kashmir at the peak of the conflict to seek answers about his disappeared father and ends up tugged into the politics of the state. The film was a huge hit, considered Vishal Bharadwaj and Shahid Kapoor’s best.

6) PK

Rajkumar Hirani’s new film ‘PK’ starring Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma is a huge hit worldwide. It is a satire on god and godmen. Within two weeks of it’s release date this film has made it into it the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in international markets.

7) Ugly

Anurag Kashyap’s new film ‘Ugly’ starring Rahul Bhat and Ronit Roy received positive reviews and was screened on 2013 Cannes Festival. The film is A terrible tale of corruption, indifference, and systemic violence starts when 10 year old daughter of an aspiring actor disappears. Considered one of the best.

8) Hasee Toh Phasee

It is a romantic-comedy drama starring Siddharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra and Adah Sharma. It’s about two misfits who struggle to fit in with their families and later discover that they have a closer bond than they realised. The film was a huge success and recieved positive reviews.

9) Citylights

It is a drama film directed by Hansal Mehta, starring Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha. The story of the film is about a poor farmer from Rajasthan coming to Mumbai in search of livelihood. The film won rave reviews from most critics and also became a success.

10) Dedh Ishqiya

It’s a sequel to the film ‘Ishqiya’, it stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi. Despite being underperformed at the box office, the story got good reviews and Madhuri and Huma were praised for their roles


Other movies include ‘Happy New Year’, ‘Kick’, ‘Bang Bang’, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, ‘Jai Ho’, Singham Returns’, ‘Ek Villain’, ‘Ragini MMS 2’, ‘Mary Kom’, ‘Action Jackson’, ‘Main Tera Hero’, ‘Gunday’, ‘2 States’, ‘Holiday’ etc.

Same with Kollywood, a lot of movies came this year, some were critically acclaimed, some were commerically successful.

1) Jigarthanda

It’s a musical gangster film directed by Karthik Subbaraj, starring Siddharth, Lakshmi Menon and Bobby Simha. It’s about an aspiring director tries his best to make a violent gangster film. His discreet attempts to research a gangster fail miserably. He discovers a mole in the gang and things go out of control for him. The movie received rave reviews by the critics and film directors.

2) Kaththi

It is an action thriller film directed by AR Murugadoss, starring Vijay in dual role and Samantha. The film recieved positive reviews and became one of the highest grossing films of the year.

3) Vellai Illa Pattathari (VIP)

It is a masala film directed by Velraj, starring Dhanush and Amala Paul. The film is about a longtime unemployed youth, who gets his dream job after a series of lashes from life and his competitor hinders his growth. Will he be able to stand out against all odds is what the movie is all about.  The film received positive reviews.

4) Kaaviyathalaivan

It is a historic film directed by Vasanthabalan, starring Siddharth and Prithviraj. the film is about the lives of two theatre artistes and the competition that exists between them in a small drama troupe. The film was critically acclaimed, considered one of the best this year.

5) Sathuranga Vettai

It is a black comedy-heist film directed by debutant H.Vinodh, starring Natarajan Subramaniam and Ishara Nair. The film is about the practical venture that portrays the life of a common man and his flawless cons in act. His ideologies seem to work and he makes money over a short period until his fates turn his own ideologies against him by his followers. In the recovery process he’s born as a new man, falls in love and is about to start over, but he was destined for even bigger scams and con acts. The film was critically acclaimed and was declared a hit.

6) Thegidi

It is a murder mystery film directed by P.Ramesh, starring Ashok Selvan and Janani Iyer. The film is about a young man with finely honed observational skills takes a job as a private detective, only to find that he’s gotten in over his head. The film recieved positive reviews from the critics.

7) Cuckoo

It is a romantic film directed by Raju Murugan, produced by Fox Star Studios, starring Dinesh and Malavika Nair playing a visually challenged pair. It is about a visually impaired man who works as a singer for an entertainment troupe and then falls in love with a blind woman. It recieved positive reviews.

8) Jeeva

It is a sports drama film directed by Suseenthiran starring Vishnu and Sri Divya. It is about an ambitious young cricketer who dreams of playing for the Indian national team encounters multiple obstacles to realizing his dream. The film received positive reviews.

9) Mundasupatti

It is an adventure comedy film directed by Ram, starring Vishnu and Nandita. It is about a photographer who works in a village where people don’t like to have their pictures taken. The film was critically acclaimed.

10) Goli Soda

It is directed by Vijay Milton, starring Kishore, Sree Raam, Pandi and Murugesh.  The story is about four boys who work and live together in a market. The film was critically acclaimed and was declared a hit.

Other movies include:- ‘Lingaa’, ‘Maan Karate’,’Veeram’, ‘Jilla’, ‘Anjaan’, ‘Kochadaiyaan’, ‘Aranmanai’, ‘Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal’, ‘Aaha Kalyanam’, ‘Saivam’, ‘Yamirukku Bayamey’, ‘Naan Sigappu Manithan’, ‘Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah’, ‘Arima Nambi’  etc.
