Today i’ll be posting about some South actors who originally debuted in Bollywood and then moved to the South.
Khushboo originally named as Nakhat Khan was born in Andheri Mumbai. She started her career as a child artist in films like ‘The Burning Train’, ‘Thodisi Bewafai’, ‘Laawaris’ and ‘Dard Ka Rishta’. She played the sister of Anil Kapoor in the film ‘Meri Jung’ opposite Javed Jaffrey. The song ‘Bol Baby Bol, Mere Sang Dhol’ became a superhit song which features Khushboo and Javed Jaffrey dancing. Then she moved to South and became one of the biggest South stars as her films in Bollywood flopped.
Simran originally named as Rishibala Naval was born in Mumbai. She originally debuted in the film ‘Sanam Harjai’ directed by Sawan Kumar but the film went unnoticed. Jaya Bachchan saw Simran hosting an episode of Superhit Muqabla, then offered her a leading role in ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ which then became her debut. She then starred in various supporting roles in ‘Muqaddar’, ‘Angaara’, ‘Bal Brahmachari’ etc. She also had a role in Anari No.1. Meanwhile Simran went to South and became one of the hit actresses there with V.I.P, Vaali, Thulladha Manamum Thullum etc.
Jyothika was born in Mumbai and is the half-sister of actress Nagma. She made her acting debut in the film ‘Doli Saja Ke Rakhna’ opposite Akshaye Khanna, but the film flopped commercially. She then moved South , made a cameo appearance in Vaali, gaining critical acclaims for her performances in Kushi, Perazhagan, Chandramukhi and Mozhi, winning one Filmfare, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and the Kalaimamani awards. She is one of the top stars in South.
Nagma, Jyothika’s half-sister also began her acting career in Bollywood with films like “Baaghi : A Rebel For Love” opposite Salman Khan, which became the 7th highest grossing film in 1990. She was one of the female leads in the film ‘Suhaag’. After that she moved South. She cited that the reason was “she was more conscious of the quality of work, in terms of meaty roles and her flair to travel throughout India understanding different cultures and her drive and passion to get acclamation from all over India”. She became one of the biggest South stars.
5) Genelia D’souza
Genelia was born in Mumbai in a Manglorean Catholic family. She made her debut in a Bollywood film ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’ opposite Riteish Deshmukh, but the film failed at the box office. Then she went down South made her Tamil debut in Shankar’s ‘Boys’ and her Telugu debut in ‘Satyam’. She worked in Bollywood film ‘Masti’ which was moderately successful. From the year 2006, her career took a turning point by acting in a Telugu film ‘Bommarillu’ which won her praise all over. She also worked on the Tamil remake of ‘Bommarillu’ called ‘Santhosh Subramanium’ where Genelia reprised the role and won praise again for the role. She then moved to Bollywood again with the film ‘Jaane Tu..Ya Jaane Na’ which was huge success. But her other Bollywood films like ‘Life Partner’ and ‘Chance Pe Dance’ failed at the box office. Her other Hindi movies such as ‘Force’ and ‘Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya’ were both average grossers. At the same time, she was working in South films such as ‘Uthamaputhiran’, ‘Urumi’ and ‘Velayudham’ which were successes at the box office.
Tamnnaah, born as Tammanna Bhatia was born in Mumbai. She is of Sindhi Descent. She made her debut in a Bollywood film called ‘Chand Sa Roshan Chehra’ which went unnoticed. She then moved to the South working in Telugu films such as Sri, Happy Days, Konchem Ishtam Kochem Kashtam etc. and Tamil movies such as Kaloori, Padikathavan, Paiyya, Thillalangadi etc. She recently made a comeback to Bollywood with the film ‘Himmatwala’ opposite Ajay Devgn which was a huge disaster at the box office. She also acted in ‘Humshakals’ which won negative reviews all over.
7) Sneha Ullal
Sneha Ullal was born and brought up in Hyderabad to a Tulu-speaking father and Sindhi mother.She made her Bollywood debut in ‘Lucky: No Time For Love’ opposite Salman Khan. Though the film failed at the box office, Sneha was known for her similarities in appearance with Aishwarya Rai. She then acted in the movie ‘Aryan’ opposite Sohail Khan, but even that film couldn’t do well at the box office. She then moved South films. She made her debut in Telugu with ‘Ullasamga Utsahamga’ which turned out to be a huge hit. Followed with movies like ‘Nenu Meeku Telusa?’, ‘King’ and ‘Simha’. She tried coming back to Bollywood with ‘Kaash..Mere Hote’ and ‘Click’ but both of them failed at the box office.
8) Mumaith Khan
Mumaith Khan was born in Mumbai. She started her career doing item numbers in Hindi movies such as Dekh Le from Munnabhai. Then, she started working in South films.
9) Kamalinee Mukherjee
Kamalinee Mukherjee was born and brought up in Kolkata. She made her debut in Bollywood with the film ‘Phir Milenge’ directed by Revathi. After that, she moved to South working in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films. Best known for her roles in ‘Anand’ (Telugu film) and Vettaiyadu Vilayaadu (Tamil Film).
10) Kajal Aggarwal
Kajal Aggarwal was born in Mumbai. She made her debut in the Bollywood film ‘Kyun..!Ho Gaya Na’ in which she played Aishwarya Rai’s friend. She later moved to the South and became a highly successful actress there. Notable films include:- Bommalattam, Magadheera, Arya 2 in Telugu and Naan Mahan Alla, Thuupaki, Jilla in Tamil. She made her comeback to Bollywood with the film ‘Singham’ opposite Ajay Devgn which was a blockbuster, and ‘Special 26’ opposite Akshay Kumar which was critically acclaimed.
11) Hansika Motwani
Hansika Motwani was born in Mumbai and is a Sindhi. She began her career as a child arist in TV serials like Shakalaka Boom Boom, Des Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi etc. and in films like Koi Mil Gaya along with Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta and Jaago along with Raveena Tandon. She made her debut in Bollywood with ‘Aap Ka Suroor’ opposite Himesh Reshammiya which was a moderate hit. Her other Hindi film, ‘Money Hai Toh Honey Hai’ along with Govinda was a flop. She moved to South made her Telugu debut with Desamuduru, continued with Kannada film Bindass and Telugu film Kantri. She made her Tamil debut in the film Mappillai, followed with Engeyum Kaadhal. Both were unsuccessful. Then she acted in ‘Velayudhum’ which was a huge success. She continued with more hits such as Singham II, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi, Maan Karate etc. making her one of the top actresses in the South cinema.
12) Rachana Maurya
Rachana Maurya was born in Mumbai. She started with item numbers in movies like ‘Dus’,’Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ and then moved to South with movies like Souryam and Yavarum Nalam/13B.
13) Shweta Basu Prasad
Shweta Basu Prasad was born in Jamshedpur and then moved to Mumbai. She started her career as a child artist in films like ‘Makdee’ and ‘Iqbal’ and also TV serials like ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki’ and ‘Karishma Kaa Karishma’. She then moved to South by acting in Telugu films such as ‘Kotha Bangaru Lokam’, ‘Kalavar King’, ‘Raa Raa’, ‘Nuvvekaddunte Nennakaddunta’ etc. and one Tamil film ‘Chandamamma’ which didn’t do very well.
14) Sameera Reddy
Sameera Reddy was originally born in Chennai. She made her debut in Bollywood films such as ‘Maine Dil Tujhko Diya’ which was unsuccessful, ‘Darna Mana Hai’, ‘Musafir’ etc. She made her Tamil debut with the film ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ which was blockbuster, and Sameera Reddy got rave reviews for her performance, thus establishing herself in the South.
Though Madhoo originally made her debut with ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ opposite Ajay Devgn, her Tamil film Azhagan released first. She acted in various South and Hindi films. ‘Roja’ was her breakthrough movie.
16) Shruti Hassan
Shruti Hassan, daughter of legendary actor Kamal Hassan started her career in Bollywood with a film called ‘Luck’, which was a huge disaster. Her other Bollywood film ‘Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji’ also didn’t work well at the box office. Notable films of Shruti include :- 7Aum Arivu, 3, Gabbar singh (telugu) etc.
17) Vidyut Jamwal
Vidyut Jamwal was born in Jammu. He made his debut in Bollywood with the film ‘Force’. Though the film was an average grosser, Vidyut Jamwal’s performance was praised. Eventhough Force was his debut, Telugu film Shakthi released earlier. Following Force, he moved down South and worked in films like Oosaravelli (Telugu), Billa 2, Thuppaki, Anjaan etc. His second Bollywood film ‘Commando’ which gave Vidyut critically acclaimed.
18) Kiran Rathod
Kiran Rathod was born in Jaipur and is the cousin of Raveena Tandon. She started her career in Bollywood with the film ‘Yaadein’ which was unsuccessful. She then moved South with a number of successful films such as Gemini, Villain, Anbe Sivam, Winner etc.
